Step-by-Step Installation
How to Hang Your Banner Correctly
Follow this 5-step installation sequence to ensure even tension distribution, maximum weather resistance, and zero eyelet failures.
Detailed Care Instructions
Wind, Cleaning, Storage & Longevity
π¬οΈCRITICAL
Wind Resistance & Outdoor Safety
High scaffolding & exposed fences
Always choose 370gsm Airflow Mesh banners for these locations. Micro-perforations allow 30% wind to pass through, reducing load on fixings by up to 70%.
Coastal & hilltop sites
Avoid solid PVC banners on fully exposed sites. Mesh is essential where wind speed regularly exceeds 30mph or the site has no natural windbreak.
Never cut DIY ventilation holes
Home-made slits destroy the woven polyester scrim inside PVC. The banner will rip completely along the cut in the first storm.
Temporary event banners
For outdoor events under 72 hours, standard 440gsm PVC performs excellently in moderate UK wind β when all eyelets are properly secured with bungees.
π§ΌIMPORTANT
Cleaning & Maintaining UV Inks
Warm water & mild soap only
Use warm (not hot) water with a few drops of mild dish soap and a soft microfibre cloth. Work in gentle circular motions and never scrub aggressively.
Never use solvents or bleach
Solvent-based cleaners, bleach, acetone, or alcohol will dissolve UV-cured inks immediately, causing permanent colour loss and irreversible surface damage.
No pressure jet washers
High-pressure washers forcibly strip ink from the printed surface layer. Always use low-pressure hand washing only β a garden hose is fine.
Dry fully before storage
Allow the banner to dry for minimum 2 hours in dry conditions before rolling. Trapped moisture leads to mildew which permanently stains PVC within 48 hours.
π¦BEST PRACTICE
Correct Storage & Crease Prevention
Always roll β never fold
Folding PVC banners creates permanent white stress creases in the vinyl coating that cannot be reversed by any method, including ironing.
Roll with printed side outward
Place face-up on a clean surface. Roll tightly from one end with the printed surface facing outward around a rigid cardboard or PVC tube.
Removing transit creases naturally
Lay flat on a clean surface in direct sunlight or a warm room (20Β°C+) for 2β4 hours. PVC softens naturally and the crease relaxes without heat application.
Long-term storage conditions
Store in a cool, dark, dry location (10β20Β°C). Avoid summer attics where temperatures exceed 40Β°C and can permanently deform or shrink the vinyl.
βοΈTIPS
UV Stability & Weather Longevity
UV-rated inks included as standard
All Design Banners UK prints use UV-cured eco-solvent inks rated for 3β5 years of outdoor exposure. Colours maintain vibrancy through typical UK weather cycles.
Direct summer sunlight exposure
South-facing banners in prolonged July/August sunlight may show slight fading after 2β3 years. North and east-facing positions extend lifespan by 30β50%.
Remove in severe weather warnings
For Met Office Yellow+ Severe Weather alerts, remove banners from scaffolding where possible to prevent catastrophic ripping and structural damage.
Weekly fixing inspections
Wind fatigue loosens bungees and ratchet straps over time. Inspect and re-tension all fixing points every 5β7 days on permanent outdoor installations.
Avoid These Costly Errors
The 6 Most Common Banner Mistakes
The most frequent errors our UK print experts see in the field β and the correct fix for each one.
β MISTAKE
Using zip-ties instead of bungees
β FIX:Elastic bungees absorb shock. Rigid zip-ties concentrate all wind force on a single eyelet until it tears.
β MISTAKE
Folding the banner for storage
β FIX:Always roll around a rigid tube with the printed side outward. One fold can permanently crease a Β£80 banner.
β MISTAKE
Solid PVC on exposed scaffolding
β FIX:Use 370gsm Airflow Mesh for all elevated or wind-exposed sites. The sail effect can topple barriers.
β MISTAKE
Cutting DIY ventilation holes
β FIX:Order Mesh banners from the outset. DIY cuts destroy the internal scrim reinforcement irreversibly.
β MISTAKE
Skipping corner eyelets when hanging
β FIX:Corners bear the highest cumulative stress. Use every single eyelet β each one matters in a storm.
β MISTAKE
Jet washing to clean a banner
β FIX:Wipe gently with warm soapy water and a soft microfibre cloth. High pressure strips UV ink permanently.
